Light and shadow is something we could easily incorporate in connection with staff. As an Instructor/Professor I often found that Early Childhood students needed time to engage with curriculum and play materials.

Some fun ways to add connection with a light and shadow theme for staff include:

Community Building Experience

This was a great community building activity that ended up being a long term installation.

During the opening of the Early Childhood Learning Laboratory all families were gifted the book “The Colors of Us”. As an extension we had this weaving project that families and children could engage with. Selecting materials that represented them. We also had visitors to the building add to the project.

It’s fun to see how it developed over time.

10 on the 10th
November 2024

On the 10th of each month I have set the intention to capture 10 moments in my day.

Finding beauty and joy in the ordinary - since that is really where we live our lives.

Sunday was the 10th and we were in Virginia visiting family.
Here is a look at the day in no particular order. It was a day filled with fun, connection and relaxation.

⭐️Enjoying my morning beverages with my sister in law and niece. What a wonderful start to Sunday! 📚 Book and show recommendations during our car drive.
🌟Subaru family of cars
🪴 Trip to a Garden where we walked, had a snack and did a little shopping. They had the best little gift shop.
🍨 Who doesn’t need a flight/taste test of ice cream?
⭐️Mountain View walk with the family
🧳 Packing up to leave in the morning. My morning self with appreciate the work.
❤️ Loading up with Pops for a field trip with the family
🔥Sitting and relaxing by the fire.
🦁 LIONS football game ended our evening with the dogs.

We understand how important giving children opportunities to build fine motor strength for writing. We also need to support writing experiences throughout the day for children.

This includes modeling writing whenever possible. This is especially powerful in small group or one on one.

Vocabulary and the use of rare words with children continues to be of interest to me. I first read the research well over 10 years and made me more intentional not only in my teaching but in my observation of teachers.

We understand the importance of how many words children hear but also the richness of those words. Whenever possible introducing new and interesting vocabulary with description to children has a huge impact. It is often a missed opportunity in a busy classroom/environment.

A few tips to try:

✅Being intentional! Select books for the week and pick specific words you want to focus on. Using a sticky note if needed.
✅Select books for the classroom that have varied vocabulary.
✅With plan/project/theme post 3-5 words that are new.
✅In the writing center, block area and science center have words posted/available for easy access.
✅Share vocabulary with families so they can reinforce and partner with you together.
✅In conversations with children find opportunities to use new words. Challenge yourself or ask your co-workers to give you feedback on this.
✅When children have a strong interest in a topic discover new vocabulary to match their energy.

I have been fortunate to work with some gifted teachers who did this seamlessly. When I asked them about this they said “practice, practice, practice”!

Mi Casa is my Home 🏠

Love this joyful book featuring Lucía. She lives in her casa with her big, beautiful familia. From la puerta, where Abuela likes to wave to the neighbors and wait for packages from Puerto Rico or Spain. To la cocina, where Lucía watches her Mamá turn empty pots into soups and arroces.
To el patio, where Lucia and her cousins put on magic shows. Lucía loves her busy and cozy casa.

When solving problems we often need to lean into our creativity. A fun activity to try is taking a low cost item you could use to connect with staff (or children/families) and brainstorm how you could use the item.

It’s that time in MICHIGAN!

It’s that time in MICHIGAN!
So many ACORNS!

I like to think as acorns as loose parts this time of year. Families and staff can partner together to make sure there are an abundance of them.

Had to share a few acorn books to explore.

10 on the 10ish

10 on the 10th
October 2024

On the 10th of each month I have set the intention to capture 10 moments in my day.

Finding beauty and joy in the ordinary - since that is really where we live our lives.

This month I spanned a few days this week. I knew the 10th was going to be packed and I wanted to be present on that day without thinking about snapping pictures.

Here is a look at the last few days in no particular order. It was a day sprinkled with work, play and connection.

😴 Rest. Sleep over at Jazzy and Udi’s house at the end of a very busy week.
🌞 Building & Dreaming. Very cool project in Boston Square with Refuge Education Center I am engaged with.
🌟Leadership. Gathering with local early childhood leaders to grow and learn together.
📚 Magazines. My friend Di saves all her magazines and I love digging in to them. So satisfying having a real one. Found a few great recipes to try.
🤿 Birthday Boy. We have a 4 year old who wanted a scuba mask! How awesome is that?
🤩 Collaboration. Loved partnering with Eric on the ECA Leadership event. I always learn so much.
🥳 Birthday. How is it possible she is 6 years old. Full of sunshine and spice!
🚶🏽‍♀️ Walking. It’s been a stunning fall and the leafs are starting to show off.
🏖️ Beach. Checking out the huge waves on a windy day.
📚 Library. I sure 💚 our library. Picking up books and printing some items.

Thanks for following along. I have found I really love this practice each month. Each time it is different and makes me slow down and savor each hour.

THE PIÑATA THAT THE FARM MAIDEN HUNG

The bilingual story of a surprise birthday party’s festive piñata, created by a cadre of animals and the farm maiden.

A young girl leaves for the day and while she’s gone, the farm maiden prepares a piñata from scratch with help from a boy, horse, goose, cat, sheep, and farmer.

After they all fall asleep they must scramble to finish preparations in time. They finish just as the girl arrives back to her surprise party.

Some things I love:

💚That key English words change to Spanish as the story builds to the big celebration.
💚It builds on the “The House That Jack Built”.
💚Throughout the book it incorporates Spanish words. It adds a new one in place of the English word from the previous page.
💚Back matter includes a glossary, definitions, and directions for making a piñata at home.
💚 It’s a companion to the award-winning The Cazuela That the Farm Maiden Stirred.
